England Rugby and Mayor of London launch project to empower young girls
England Rugby and the Mayor of London have launched London EmpowerHER, a new project which aims to create a healthier, safer and more inclusive future for young women and girls in Redbridge and Brent.

The initiative was launched by Red Roses legend Maggie Alphonsi at Eton Manor rugby club last week. The announcement was followed by a training session for over 40 young girls from Redbridge and Brent.
Alphonsi said: “I owe everything to rugby. The sport has taught me so many important life skills including leadership, teamwork, and discipline. It’s great that, through London EmpowerHer, so many young girls will get the chance to play rugby and develop as people.”
The project will involve non-contact rugby activities and will promote physical fitness, leadership skills, and a pathway to better employability. Beyond that, the project is also committed to supporting London’s anti-violence against women campaign, by spreading awareness and education.
With England hosting Rugby World Cup 2025, and with Twickenham being a host venue for the tournament, England Rugby is seeking to grow the women and girls’ game throughout London.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who said: “I’m passionate about the positive impact sport can have on young people’s lives. This brilliant initiative will give young women a great grounding in rugby, help them to fall in love with sport and learn new skills both on and off the pitch.
“With the Rugby World Cup next year, this is a great opportunity to inspire young women and girls to get active and help ensure they grow up in a safer and fairer London.”
