Borthwick and George react to win against Wales
Steve Borthwick and Jamie George reflect on England's 16-14 victory over Wales in Round 2 of the Guinness Men's Six Nations.
An Alex Mann score added to Wales' first-half penalty try to earn them a 5-14 advantage at half time, but tries from Ben Earl and Fraser Dingwall and a brace of penalty kicks from George Ford sealed the deal for England as they edged Warren Gatland's side 16-14 at Twickenham Stadium.
It was a first Twickenham outing as captain for Saracens' Jamie George on the occasion of his 87th cap as he led an unchanged outfit to the side that defeated Italy 24-27 in Rome last weekend.
"I loved every second of the day, from the walk into the stadium to the final whistle," said George. "I really hope everyone in the stands did too. We felt a huge amount of pride and noise coming from the stands and that’s what we love. That’s the sort of thing that we wanted to do and that’s just the first step.
"The most important thing for us now is that we don’t get ahead of ourselves. The fallow week is very important because we have a great opportunity to rest up for a bit and then really focus on what we need to do to get better."
This weekend's comeback victory over Wales sees Borthwick's England go two from two heading into the first fallow week of the tournament - a result that the Men's head coach says reflects the growth of the squad in recent weeks.
"A big thing we take from today is that there is a team here that stays in the fight and finds a way to win," said Borthwick.
"It shows the work we’re doing each day. The players are developing a trait in themselves: One that stays in the fight. There have been developments and inroads in our attack and I think we have a defence that wants to go and get the ball back."
England trailed at Twickenham until the 72nd minute when Ford's second penalty edged England ahead against a 14-man Wales side.
"I always sensed in the players that there was a confidence that we would find a way to get the result and I thought the wider squad played a big role in getting that win. We saw big contributions from Dan Cole and Ellis Genge. Theo Dan and Chandler Cunningham-South came on and had big impacts, as well as Danny Care."
England head to Edinburgh on 24 February to face Scotland in Round three before returning to Twickenham to welcome Andy Farrell's Ireland on 9 March.
