Will & Alexis do Thatcham club proud
It may have been cold, wet and windy in the Berkshire town of Thatcham recently but two of the local rugby club members have been out in all weathers to help their local community.
Will Sewell, at 53, is Thatcham Rugby Club’s former chairman and current clubhouse manager. His cheery welcome for people arriving at the Newbury Racecourse vaccination centre saw him chosen by fellow volunteers as their first Volunteer of the Week
Will had a close friend die from coronavirus aged just 50 and said: “It makes me even more determined to do my bit to fight against this virus, and the vaccine is our way out.”
He is usually the first volunteer people see, either at the gate or directing cars and gets lots of thanks as people get protection from the virus.
“As chairman of the rugby club I was handing out awards, so it’s really exciting to receive one myself, especially for something that is such a joy to do," he said.
At the same time. one of the club’s young players, Alexis Havelin, aged eight, decided that walking and running 50 miles during February half-term could both help earn her Brownies charity badge and raise money for Thatcham’s Minis & Juniors section.
Alexis was missing her rugby and eager to get back on the pitch and in rain and shine she stuck to her task, passing her £50 target and raising almost £350 for match day kit and equipment to support the training of the youngest club players and to help grow their love of rugby.
