West Midlands club with the world's tallest rugby posts
Wednesbury RUFC boasts some impressive posts.
Wednesbury Rugby Club in the West Midlands have the tallest rugby posts in the world, a lofty achievement that made it into the Guinness World Records.
On the First XV pitch, it’s easy for the referee to judge conversions, penalties and drop goals. Established in 1921, a decade ago the club erected steel tube posts which are 38.26 m (125.5 ft; 1,506 in) high using a special crane to put them up.
But that’s not their only achievement. They were awarded Staffordshire’s Morris Clift Owl for their exemplary discipline record and respect for visiting match officials.
That’s the spirit of the club, the sport’s values are noticeable throughout the age groups, with players’ and parents’ codes of conduct and sportsmanship uppermost.
They finished their season as Staffordshire Owen Cup runner up and President’s Day saw the First XV take on a President’s team and the Vets play Walsall 3rds /Vets.
Earlier in the season, three of the club’s amazing volunteers Trevor Roberts, Donna Thomas and Kevin Ferris enjoyed a Honda Grounds Connected experience at Twickenham Stadium and even got to mow the hallowed turf.
That stood them in good stead for a big facelift for the club pitches which included bringing in tons of sand, verti draining, weeding, seeding, fertilising and cutting, then repeating.
All completed in time for some friendlies in August and Wednesday night touch to get players back into rugby or step up their fitness for next season – when they have high hopes.
